Known as "Waterfall Gill", he was a son of painter Edmund Ward Gill and brother to painters William Ward Gill and George Reynolds Gill of Hereford, England.  Edmund Marriner Gill was mainly a landscape painter, in watercolours and oils, of English, Scottish and Welsh scenes.   He was a student of the Royal Academy in London in 1843
 
He received a bronze medal from the Crystal Palace Picture Competition, Sydenham, S.E., London in 1876; a silver medal for Waterfall, South Wales in 1873; and a silver medal for Stack Rocks, Holyhead, 1873.
